Italian Navy receives final MH-90 MITT helicopter

NHIndustries has delivered the final MH-90 Maritime Italian Navy tactical transport (MITT) helicopter to the Italian Navy, where the type will be utilised for amphibious support and special forces operations.

The aircraft was assembled and test flown at Leonardo’s Venice-Tessera plant before being handed over on August 26 at the Luni-Sarzana naval base in Northern Italy, where it will be operated by 5° Gruppo Elicotteri (5th Helicopter Group). Known as the MH-90 MITT in Italian service, the platform is based on the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) variant of the NH90 family.

This handover marks the last of ten MH-90 MITT helicopters to be delivered into Italian service since the programme began in 2017. The MH-90 MITT force will add to the 38 current - soon to rise to 40 - SH-90A NATO Frigate Helicopters (NFH) that are already operated by the Italian Navy.

Designed to include the main features of the NH90 TTH, such as rear ramp and missions equipment, the type has also been combined with additional features from the NH90 NFH, including an optimised landing gear and dynamics for shipboard operations.
