The US Department of State announced that it had given approval for Japan to procure up to nine additional Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye radar aircraft on September 10. The procurement is valued at up to $3.1 billion.
This followed the announcement of a contract for four E-2Ds for Japan earlier in September. Japan reportedly plans to order one E-2D per year. If it buys all nine of the additional E-2Ds, this will give it a force of 13 E-2Ds, enough to replace Japan’s current E-2C force on a one-for-one basis.
