ON JULY 6 it will be 20 years since Kai Tak closed. The jaw-dropping descent and 47o right turn onto short final to Runway 13, which were indelible features of the approach, have become just a memory for those who were lucky enough to visit the airport in its heyday. I was among many who immortalised the arrivals and departures through still photographs, but fewer enthusiasts captured moving pictures.

This new DVD from AirUtopia encompasses the essence of Kai Tak at its best. It includes footage from the usual locations – the roof of the multi-storey car park and the deck on top of the Hong Kong Aviation Club. But the videographers also ventured into some of the tower blocks that lined the approach path, and to areas around the Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminal, to obtain imagery from vantage points few of us explored.
