Kamchatka’s Heavyweights

Russian Navy MiG-31

Russian Navel Aviation stations a squadron of MiG-31 long-range interceptor fighters on the isolated Kamchatka peninsula. This remote unit is charged with the air defence and control of this easternmost corner of the country, as Alexander Mladenov explains.

The squadron’s aircrew are accustomed to wearing orange immersion survival suits in case they have to eject over the cold waters surrounding the Kamchatka peninsula.
Sergey Kuznetsov

Yelizovo air base, Kamchatka peninsula, is situated next to the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
