RAAF ‘CLASSIC’ HORNET TRAINING FINALE
THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN Air Force’s (RAAF’s) final class of F/A-18 Hornet trainee pilots completed the final course with No 2 Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) on December 5. In recognition of the milestone, the six newly rated pilots along with four instructors from the OCU conducted a low-level formation flight over RAAF Base Williamtown, New South Wales, upon their return from RAAF Base Townsville, Queensland. The personnel had been deployed to Townsville for Exercise ‘High Sierra 19’. Conducted in the Townsville restricted airspace and the Townsville Field Training Area, the exercise was carried out in conjunction with the last three weeks of the F/A-18 class. Two of the pilots have been assigned to No 77 Squadron at Williamtown and two joined No 75 Squadron at RAAF Base Tindal, Northern Territory. The final two pilots will receive further training following their assignment to No 1 Squadron, which operates the F/A-18F at RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland. Nos 77 and 75 Squadrons will respectively transition to the F-35A at the end of 2020 and 2021.
