Lidar crowd analytics set to make airports safer

The Indoor Lab and Cepton have partnered up to create anonymised crowd perception technology

A lidar-based crowd real time analytics solution has aided Orlando Airport (MCO) in creating the world’s safest terminal during the pandemic, according to The Indoor Lab.

The real time foot traffic analytics company formed a partnership with technology company, Cepton. Together, they created the ‘Safe Place’ solution using Cepton’s Helius Smart Lidar System.

“With public concerns focused on cleanliness of public and commercial spaces, we extended our Safe Place platform beyond occupancy and social distancing, creating the first proprietary real-time sanitization detection solution in the market,” said Patrick Blattner, co-founder and Chief Product Officer of The Indoor Lab. “A Safe Place enabled environment ensures locations have been cleaned, distancing measures are followed, and safer occupancy levels are maintained.”

Helius allows the analytics company to provide anonymous information regarding the 3D tracking of people to help improve the safety and cleanliness of large spaces. The company’s visual analytics platform powers the synect evenflow crowd radar media lights in Terminal 2 at MCO.

The strategic partnership hopes to lay the foundation of innovations to help save customers money, as well as improve public and private commercial spaces.

This crowd analytics solution relies on the detection range of Cepton’s MMT series lidars and the Helius system that provides object dimensions, locations and velocity. The structural benefits of the MMT allow the lidars to be used in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Helius also allows the aggregation of data from a variety of lidar sensors, therefore enabling tracking of the same person across overlapping areas.

In the HCO deployment, the technology company is able to cover around 50,000 square feet of the terminal area. According to Indoor Lab, this would have required many more cameras if the lidars were not implemented.

The sensors are used to detect, track and classify objects, without the need to capture biometric data. Facial features and other physical traits are not shown, further increasing customer privacy.

As well as featuring the new technology in airports, the two companies also have projects that monitor traffic in hotels, stadiums, large commercial venues and retail spaces. By configuring data such as motion tracking and the speed of individuals, the technology is able to create a better customer experience by initiating crowd control and managing queues.
