The aircraft was released to coincide with the launch of City Update 06: Southwest Germany.

The Do 31 was born out of an ambitious Cold War initiative by the West German military to create a new air force composed primarily of jet-powered VTOL aircraft designed to carry 7,700lb of cargo or up to 36 troops in full combat gear.

Dornier only produced three experimental prototypes with the designation Do 31 E (Experimental). Although the type never entered production, it was the only Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) experimental jet-powered VTOL utility/transport aircraft ever to have flown.

It was powered by two Rolls-Royce Pegasus BE.53/2 turbofans, each producing 15,500lb of thrust, giving it a service ceiling of 35,100ft, a maximum speed of 393kts and a range of 1,000Nm.

Despite the successes and prospects for commercial adoption in addition to military roles, the Do 31 project was abandoned in the early 1970s as the concept of a jet-powered VTOL Air Force proved too costly and complex to implement.

The Dornier Do 31 for Microsoft Flight Simulator sports a high-definition 3D model with PBR (Physically Based Rendering) effects and details such as placards, rivets and an authentic cargo hold with an operational rear-mounted ramp.

Other details include animated thrust vectoring nozzles, doors for the wingtip-mounted secondary thrust system and engine fans. It also features seven liveries and a cockpit with detailed 3D instruments. It is available on the in-sim Marketplace for $14.99 (approx £12).
