A look at the aerial firefighting effort that saved North Macedonia this summer

With its own firefighting aeroplanes left unserviceable this summer, North Macedonia faced catastrophic wildfires. Igor Bozinovski explains how aircraft from neighbouring countries helped to save the small Balkan nation from the flames.

The summer of 2021 was one of the worst in decades for open space fires that devastated lives, land, forests, houses and tourism across the Balkans – in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey.
