Lufthansa Cargo begins renewal of airfreight centre in Frankfurt

The facility is set to be completed in 2028, with plans to provide faster shipment of cargo

Lufthansa Cargo is expected to further develop and renew its logistics centre at its hub in Frankfurt after receiving approval from its supervisory board.

Modernisation of the Lufthansa Cargo Centre began earlier this month and is set to be completed in 2028.

The firm’s freight facility at Frankfurt Airport is its most important site in Germany and handles around 80% of its global cargo volume.

Peter Garber, CEO of the cargo airline, said: “With this renewal of our logistics centre, we are investing in our airfreight base in Frankfurt and thus creating the structural requirements for even faster and more efficient airfreight. In doing so, we are also making the jobs of our employees at our most important logistics location in Germany safe for the future.”

According to the carrier, its main priorities are digitalisation, increasing the importance of e-commerce and providing new product requirements which have altered the demands of the logistics hub.

Construction of the central high-rack storage system in the cargo centre is the first stage of the development programme. Existing buildings are also being modernised as part of the scheme.

“The holistically planned [upgrade] of the building infrastructure in combination with improvements to the logistics system and internal material flows will further increase the handling speed of shipments as well as the service quality for all Lufthansa Cargo customers,” explained Harald Gloy, Lufthansa Cargo’s chief operations officer.

Activities will continue as normal whilst the construction takes place. The company also states that the modular approach will not interfere with the customer experience.

Lufthansa Cargo serves around 300 destinations in more than 100 countries with its own fleet of freighters, the belly capacities of passenger aircraft operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and SunExpress, and an extensive road feeder service network.
