Martin-Baker Meteors – How first-generation jets test ejection seats for 5th-gen fighters

For almost 80 years Martin-Baker has operated Meteors as ejection seat test-beds. In the January 2017 issue of Flypast Darren Harbar discovered the twin jet still had much to offer

When you consider that the Meteor prototype first flew in 1943, it’s hard to believe the type is still working for its living, but that’s very much the case at Chalgrove in Oxfordshire. This is the flight test centre for Martin-Baker Aircraft, British pioneers of ejection seats, and home to a pair of T.7 two-seaters.
