The final three months of last year were the busiest the airport had ever recorded
Cargo volume at Miami International Airport hit all-time highs in 2020 with 2.32 million tons, surpassing the previous year’s total by 57,382 tons.
An average of 210,000 tons of cargo was recorded for October, November and December, which were the busiest months the airport has ever seen. MIA concluded 2020 with a record high of 59,000 cargo-only flights, approximately 8000 more than the previous year.
Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade County mayor, commented: “Congratulations to Lester Sola, the aviation director and the MIA cargo community on reaching this milestone, which signals that Miami-Dade County’s largest economic engine continues to generate more business revenue and job creation for our residents.
“The fact that this growth occurred during the pandemic is even more encouraging. As our local economic rebound progresses, we are fortunate to have a leading passenger and cargo hub like MIA that is thriving during these unprecedented times.”
MIA is the busiest US airport for international freight and perishable products and has continued to act as a global hub for essential supplies throughout the pandemic.
In 2015, the airport became the first in the Western Hemisphere and the second in the world to be chosen by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as a pharmaceutical freight hub. This meant the base was prepared to act as a leading cargo hub for the COVID-19 vaccines.
Last year, MIA won the Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain (AFLAS) award for being the best airport in North America for cargo.
