Visually one of the most iconic aircraft of World War Two, the Chance Vought F4U Corsair was the result of a US Navy requirement for a high-speed, high altitude fighter to be used for both carrier and land-based operations.
The aircraft’s characteristic gull-wing design was implemented to accommodate the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800-8W ‘Double Wasp’ engine with its huge Hamilton Standard Hydromatic propeller. This approach enabled the design of short and sturdy undercarriage legs which were ideal for carrier operations. The Corsair ultimately proved itself both in air- to-air and air-to-ground roles. It saw action not only in World War Two but also the Korean War and various other hostilities until 1969.
