Outright speed and outstanding low-level capabilities were what the General Dynamics FB-111A brought to US Air Force Strategic Air Command, during a somewhat unsung 20-plus years of service

“This mission was a serious business. The aircrew had to take out a radar installation on an obscure island far to the north. It was heavily defended and more than likely there would be all-weather enemy interceptors over the target. Slowly, the SAC bomber eased out and pointed its nose down the runway. With sleet beginning to pelt the aircraft, the pilot pushed the throttle forward and a long stream of blue and orange flame reached out behind as the afterburners rapidly accelerated the jet into the cold, black night.
