MU-X Activity Expected

The US Marine Corps is expected to issue a request for information (RFI) to industry before the end of 2017 for its MU-X (Marine Air Ground Task Force) Unmanned Air System Expeditionary requirement. A system intended to provide an upgraded unmanned air vehicle capability for Marine units both afloat and ashore. The MU-X RFI is expected to call for a Group 5 air vehicle comparable in performance – speed, range, endurance, payload – to the General Atomics MQ-1 Predator or MQ-9 Reaper, but capable of operating both from ships and from unimproved ground sites, which suggests a tilt-rotor design may be procured.

The RFI will be followed by a yearlong analysis of alternatives study. A procurement programme could start as early as 2019. The Marines are interested in the MU-X being integrated with both air and ground units, have a weapons delivery capability, and to be suitable for missions such as electronic warfare.
