Passenger numbers at the German hub have been increasing since January, with hopes that this month’s figures will exceed one million
Munich Airport is beginning to experience signs of recovery, as for the first time in more than a year, the hub recorded over 50,000 passengers on two days this month so far.
The site’s operator, Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), believes that the number of travellers throughout the entirety of July will surpass one million.
During the first half of the year, the airport was still experiencing major impacts from the pandemic. Over the first six months of 2021, it recorded a total of 40,000 flights and just under 2.2 million passengers.
Despite this, Munich has said that demand in the aviation industry has been steadily increasing since the beginning of the year. The second quarter saw the amount of passengers triple, with twice as many take-offs compared to January, February and March combined.
The airport hopes that this increase continues for the remainder of the year, as the easing of travel restrictions and the rollout of the vaccination programme should enable more to travel by air.
“We have hopefully made it through this rough patch and are leading Munich Airport further out of the crisis,” said Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport. “I am confident that our airport will regain its status as premium hub and then the volume of traffic will reach and even surpass its previous high.”
Travellers departing from the German hub are now able to choose between 19 long-haul destinations in North America and Asia as these routes have reopened.
