In April and May last year, the US and Chinese navies each sailed two aircraft carriers and their escorts into the South China Sea. It was one of the heaviest concentrations of competing naval powers in modern times – and in one of the world’s most volatile regions. Expect these near collisions of fleets to continue as China grows its navy while the US and its allies try to deter it.
