New home sought for combat veteran P-40 project

A significant Curtiss P-40N project is available to purchase in Melbourne, Australia

The rebuild of ‘Yellow 63’ / Flo-II, a genuine USAAF Pacific Theatre veteran began around the year 2000 but has progressed slowly since then due to other projects taking precedence.

Built in New York in 1942 and shipped to the South Pacific, the fighter was allocated to the 8th Fighter Squadron of the 49th Fighter Group. Piloted by Lt Charles A Peterson who scored at least two victories in this aircraft, it was at some stage damaged and written off by the USAAF as they moved up through the island chain towards Japan. Subsequently, the buried aircraft was discovered 50 years later and recovered for preservation by its current owner.

Now available for sale, the project features substantial original wreckage including wings, confirming the airframe’s identity and provenance. As many original parts as possible are being utilised in its rebuild and are supplied with the project. For more information contact Platinum Fighters.
