On July 28, a new replica of Ryan NYP Spirit of St Louis undertook its maiden flight from Arlington Municipal Airport, Washington in the hands of pilot Ron Fowler. The aircraft has been built by JNE Aircraft’s John Norman and put on the register as N211XX. The original completed the first solo non-stop transatlantic flight in 1927. JNE’s machine even replicates the ‘patches’ applied to Lindbergh’s aircraft after souvenir hunters tore fabric from the fuselage of the aeroplane when it reached Paris. The original NYP is now in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and around 20 airworthy and static NYP reproductions have been created over the years.
