Planning was meticulous: the invasion of the Soviet Union – Operation Barbarossa – was the summation of all of Germany’s extensive military experience and success. The plan was to be conducted over a vast area and every element of it was subjected to minute scrutiny. The massive war machine was due to roll eastwards on June 26, 1941.
