Oregon Eagles: The F-15s of Portland and Kingsley Field

Tom Kaminski reports on the two major F-15C/D Eagle bases in the US State of Oregon

Since late 2010, the Pacific Northwest state of Oregon has been home to the largest number of Boeing  F-15C/Ds in the continental US. Operated by units of the Oregon Air National Guard (ANG), the fleet includes Eagles that are tasked operationally and for training. The F-15C/D is operated by six ANG wings that are responsible for 137 jets and provide 31% of the Nation’s Aerospace Control Alert (ACA) assets. Nearly 40% of the ANG Eagle fleet operates from Portland ANG Base (ANGB) and Kingsley Field ANGB – located in northern and southern Oregon, respectively.

A pair of F-15Cs, comprising serials 84-0005 and 84-0026, from the 142nd Wing’s 123rd FS operate over northern Oregon during a training sortie on December 3, 2021. Both Eagles are equipped with Lockheed Martin AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods and carry a full complement of AIM-9 and AIM-120 training missiles.

Portland ANGB is adjacent to Portland International Airport, around six miles northeast of the city. The facility is the headquarters for the 142nd Wing – re-designated from the 142nd Fighter Wing (FW) on March 6, 2020. Reporting to the wing’s 142nd Operations Group (OG), the 123rd Fighter Squadron (FS) ‘Redhawks’ is one of five combat-coded ANG squadrons that currently operate the F-15C/D and report to Air Combat Command.
