Paveway and Litening: Key to the RAF Typhoon Force's successful strikes in Yemen

Alan Warnes explains how the RAF Typhoon FGR4s were capable of striking targets in Yemen – more than 1,500 miles (2,500km) away from RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus – with pin-point accuracy.

The four Typhoon FGR4s involved in the January 12 strikes were outfitted with both air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. The fighters were fitted with four Paveway IV laser-guided bombs, as well as two Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAMs) and a single Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) - the standard air-to-air fit used for sorties in support of Operation Shader.

After a series of Houthi attacks on ships passing through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, both the US and UK mounted airstrikes on rebel targets in the early hours of January 12. The RAF provided four Typhoon FGR4s and a A330-243MRTT Voyager KC2/KC3 multi-role tanker transport from RAF Akrotiri – operated by the 83rd Expeditionary Air Group (EAG). The latter would have topped up the four Typhoons with gas to and from the targets, that were approximately 1,630 miles (2,622km) away in Yemen.
