Postcard from Vietnam

NEWS Special

AFM contributor Alan Worsley recently visited Vietnam, where he witnessed daily operations by the Su-22 Fitter strike-fighter force and other types in service at Da Nang air base, home to the 372 Division of the Vietnam People’s Air Force.

Da Nang’s 929 Fighter Regiment, under the command of the 372 Division, flies various ‘Fitter’ derivatives – the single-seat Su-22M4 and the two-seat Su-17UM (former Ukrainian Air Force aircraft), Su-22UM3 and Su-22UM3K (including ex-Czech Republic examples). The regiment is not thought to operate the earlier Su-22M3 single-seater, which is limited to the 921 Fighter-Bomber Regiment at Hanoi. Serial 5864 is a Su-22M4 ‘Fitter-K’ – the most advanced variant of the variable-geometry strike fighter, with the Klyon laser rangefinder/target designator. All photos Alan Worsley
