POWER STRUGGLE

Russia’s aero industry is struggling to supply engines for the mass-produced Russian-made rotorcraft in the 11- to 13-tonne class.

Russian helicopter-makers tend to rely on a single turboshaft family to power almost all of their commercially successful rotorcraft, but the country is finding it difficult to acquire enough engine to satisfy the needs of its rotary fleet.

This is a direct consequence of the Crimea crisis and the interruption of the supply of engines of the TV3-117/VMA-2500 family produced at Motor Sich company in Zaporozhya, Ukraine. The rapid and irreversible deterioration of the political and economic relations with Ukraine in 2014 put both the Russian helicopter industry and the military in a rather tense situation.
