1412’s cockpit was dominated by a large control wheel and was snug indeed. Just visible beyond the instrument panel is the hull structure.

Linton Hope recorded that the general layout of the AD Boat, and its hull’s planing bottom, were “designed by the Technical Department of the Air Service, based on a 50ft design which was one of the early National Physical Laboratory models (No 135, I believe) with the addition of a much longer forebody”. Despite this he brought to the project his own form of aircraft hull, encouraged by his commanding officer Wg Cdr C. R. J. Randall.
