Prescott Regional Airport opens new terminal

The construction was conducted by mostly local subcontractors and included the implementation of new roads and taxiways

Prescott Regional Airport in Arizona celebrated the opening of its brand-new passenger terminal earlier this month (June 18 and 19).

The new $13.9m (£10m) facility – built by Willmeng Construction and Fann Contracting – has replaced the former building that was originally opened in the 1940s.

To celebrate the completion of the terminal, the airport hosted a private dedication event and open house which provided a guided tour and talks with staff.

“This regional asset will be utilised by more than just Prescott residents,” said Greg Mengarelli, Prescott mayor. “This is a city-owned airport, but we don’t really see it that way, we see this as regional cooperation. This is everyone’s regional airport.”

Willmeng wanted to use local subcontractors on the project, with 90% of them being from the Prescott region. This included architecture firm, Michael Taylor Architects, Dibble Engineering and LSW Engineers.

Alongside the building of the terminal, new entry roads were implemented, hangars were torn down and utility lines were relocated. Furthermore, new parking areas, an apron and taxiways were also constructed.

The facility is 18,000sq ft, with its most prominent feature pinpointed as the Douglas Fir timber ceiling which covers the entire area. It was also designed with expansion as a priority, therefore allowing the outdoor courtyard to be transformed into additional gate holding space if needed.

“What was really amazing about this terminal is the FAA was quite generous in letting us build this ‘big roof’ concept,” said Robin Sobotta, airport director.

“And I do credit the architects and designers. They did a great job in allowing us to have the future expansion incorporated as part of the design. What is extraordinary is we have the ability to build out those spaces in the near future as we grow.”

Prescott Airport plans to expand its frequency of flight offerings due to the new development. United Express has already added more nonstop services to Denver and Los Angeles.
