Preservation History: IWM Sunderland

From a gutted hulk used as a nightclub to a very fine museum piece, the restoration of IWM Duxford’s Short Sunderland is one of the preservation movement’s true epics

Few of the thousands who make the pilgrimage to IWM Duxford and see the restored Sunderland V realise the decades of work required to bring what was an empty shell back to pristine condition. Likewise, they may be unaware that so much of that work, particularly in the early years, was carried out by volunteers.
