Private sector satellite services “game changer” for Ukraine

The provision of satellite imaging capabilities to Ukraine has significantly aided the country in shaping the strategic military response to Russia’s February 24 invasion, according to a former chairman of the State Space Agency of Ukraine.

In a pre-recorded presentation recording from Odessa in southern Ukraine delivered to delegates attending the Defence Space 2022 conference in London on May 10, Vlodymyr Usov, said the lack of initial remote satellite sensing capabilities at the start of the war had impacted the response of Ukrainian forces.

However, Usov said that provision of satellite imaging by external parties had proved to be a ‘game changer” for Kyiv, enabling better understanding of Russian military movements and “figuring out what the next step of our opponents [would be] on the battlefield.”
