Owen Zupp has flown Airbus narrowbodies as well as the Boeing 737 and 787, but it is the 747 that will always hold a special place in his heart. Here, he recounts some of his outstanding memories of the iconic jumbo.
It was a twist of fate that ever placed me on the flight deck of the Boeing 747. For nearly a decade I had contentedly flown her little sibling – the 737 – on short domestic air routes and was satisfied that was where my airline career would both begin and end. However, when that airline collapsed, I was moved into the world of long-haul flying, where short hops were replaced by long nights over darkened oceans, glimpses of icebergs and airways that tip-toed through war zones.
