The destinations will become the airline’s fifth and sixth in Africa since the start of the pandemic
Qatar Airways has announced that it will begin operations to Lusaka in Zambia and Harare in Zimbabwe on August 6, connecting passengers from the countries to the airline’s extensive network of flights from its Doha hub.
The services will be operated by the Boeing 787-8 and initially land in Lusaka before flying onwards to Harare 1 hour 20 minutes later. The return flights leave the Zimbabwean capital and stop in the southern African city on the way to Doha.
Most notably, the airline says the routes will provide 30 tonnes of cargo capacity per flight, facilitating key exports from the countries to support increased demand for trade between Zambia and Zimbabwe with destinations on the Qatar Airways network such as London, Frankfurt and multiple points in China.
Akbar Al Bakar, Qatar Airways Group chief executive, said: “Africa continues to be an area of strong growth for Qatar Airways and launching this service will support the development of the economy and tourism sector in both countries. Not only do we continue to rebuild our network after the pandemic, but we are actively expanding it with the addition of these two key destinations.”
The new routes mean that Qatar will operate more than 100 weekly flights to 27 destinations in Africa and takes the total number of new destinations added to the network since the start of the pandemic to ten.
