R.A.F. Comet Operations

FEW fanfares have signalled the coming into service with R.A.F. Transport Command of the de Havilland Comet. Consequently, it has probably not been widely realized that in No. 216 Squadron the R.A.F. now has the only military transport unit in the free world operating jet aircraft. On the face of it, there was perhaps little reason for the Comets' arrival at Lyneham to be regarded as anything but a routine matter of conversion to a new type. After all, the R.A.F. is old in jet experience and the Comet became the World's first jet transport in commercial service five years ago.
