The early 1960s saw the introduction of jet services with many airlines. Ethiopian Air Lines obviously wanted to add such aircraft to its own fleet as well. A choice had to be made between the SE-210 Caravelle, the Comet 4 and the Boeing 720B. The hot and high conditions at some airports made the Caravelle inappropriate, whereas the Comet was considered obsolete.
