RNZAF send NH90s to assist Australian bushfire crisis

The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) has deployed three NHIndustries NH90 TTH medium-lift tactical transport helicopters and roughly 80 additional New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel to Australia to provide support in the fight against the country’s ongoing bushfires.

Travelling from RNZAF Base Ohakea, Palmerston North, New Zealand, the NH90s and NZDF personnel were deployed to Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Richmond, Hawkesbury, New South Wales. NZDF forces were transported to the base by an RNZAF Lockheed C-130H(NZ) Hercules and an RAAF Boeing C-17A Globemaster III. The NZDF will remain in Australia until the end of the month.

To assist in the ongoing fight against the continuing bushfire crisis, NZDF NH90 TTHs and personnel and will provide additional support, relief and recovery efforts across New South Wales and Australia’s southern coast.

The three NH90 TTHs are operated by No 3 Squadron, based from RNZAF Base Ohakea. The unit is the sole operator of the RNZAF’s NH90 TTH fleet, which consists of eight examples and a ninth airframe which is used for spare parts. The first NH90 to be deployed was NZ3302 (c/n 1206/TNZA02) on January 6. The second helicopter arrived in Australia on January 8 and the third will arrive in the country by the end of the week.
