As early as the late 1970s, McDonnell Douglas had started looking at what may, eventually, supersede the DC-10. The aim was better efficiency, longer range, more passengers and a truly ‘global’ aircraft that could still uphold the same values as the DC-10 but bring the aircraft into more modern times.
