Schiphol introduces mobile food ordering app

After a successful trial of the new service, customers can access the platform through the airport’s website or via a QR code

Passengers passing through Amsterdam/Schiphol are now able to use its new app to order food and drinks, with the option of contactless payments.

Orders can be collected by customers from the outlets situated across the facility.

By clicking on a banner on the Schiphol app or by scanning the QR code situated on the waiting time screens, passengers are able to then place an order, pay online and select a pick up time.

The new ordering platform has been made available following the completion of a pilot study – which involved visitors being able to buy food and drink from departure lounge one – which found the service to be popular with travellers.

“While we tested food and beverage pre-ordering on a small scale, we received a large number of positive responses, so we decided to expand this service,” said Irene Muysson, manager of retail, food and beverage and commercial services at Amsterdam Airport. “It is now even more user-friendly, since from now on the Schiphol app can be used to do so directly, and even more catering outlets at the airport are now connected. This frees up more time for our passengers to relax, since their orders are ready for pick-up at the specified time.”

Due to its success, the airport decided to extend the app’s features in partnership with food service company, HMSHost.

Dennis Hoogreef, VP of IT and facilities international at HMSHost International, added: “Together with Schiphol, we have successfully integrated our own multi-channel self-service ordering and payment solutions, Your Order Please (YOP), with the Schiphol Airport’s app.

“In this way we meet the passengers demands for contactless food and beverage services, while contributing to our partner’s goals to enhance the experience through one single app for the total airport customer journey.”

The firm has been working with the hub since 1995 and is one of the largest providers of hospitality amenities at the site, with 79 outlets.

HMSHost also inaugurated its new hospitality facilities at Manchester Airport last month (July 14), on the opening day of its new ‘super terminal’.
