Shuttleworth May Evening Airshow

Shuttleworth May Evening Airshow

For a show which boasted two Lysanders, a Merlin-powered fighter four-ship and a trio of illustrious 1930s racers, it may seem a little puzzling to suggest that a tiny, aesthetically challenged, motorcycle-engined ultralight devoid of any markings could be the highlight of the day. But to see the 1923 English Electric Wren — benefi ting from a winter overhaul to its 8hp fl at-twin ‘powerplant’ — flying circuits instead of its customary hops in the hands of ‘Willy’ Hackett was as magical and compelling a sight as anything that will be seen in the glorious Old Warden setting during 2019.
