South Africa eyes C-390 to replace ageing C-130BZ fleet?

At the request of the South African Air Force (SAAF), Embraer Defense & Security will deploy a multi-mission C-390 Millennium to AFB Waterkloof in Pretoria on November 24, where the medium-lift strategic airlifter will demonstrate its capabilities to the air arm, which has long been searching for a successor to its ageing C-130BZ Hercules fleet.

This long-planned visit comes after a South African delegation visited Brazil in April 2023, during which talks were held regarding plans to bring a C-390 to South Africa for testing and demonstration purposes. The aircraft is expected to arrive at AFB Waterkloof at approximately 0730hrs (local time). According to a notice issued by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Embraer will “showcase the aircraft’s cutting-edge capability for air-to-air refuelling, humanitarian aid capability/flying equipment, search-and-rescue and aerial firefighting capability” during the visit.
