South African Airways CEO reveals his plan to rebuild the airline

Despite being a shadow of its former self, South African Airways has ambitions to rebuild its operation. Andreas Spaeth chats to CEO John Lamola about his plans for the future

South African Airways (SAA) can trace its history back to 1934, when the country's government took control of independent carrier Union Airways. After World War Two, expansion was swift and the airline was soon providing an essential lifeline for the troubled nation. The apartheid regime, which had been in effect since 1948, would cause numerous issues for SAA, including restricted operations after countries such as Australia and the US banned all flights by South African-owned carriers.
