Stranded in a Soviet time capsule

With poor connections, infrequent flights and practices long since replaced elsewhere, Northern Russia’s White Sea coast offers enthusiasts the aviation experience of yesteryear. Bernd Sturm reflects on a trip to the land that time forgot.

The 1976-vintage tri-jet, RA-88188 (c/n 9620848), wore the striking blue and white livery of former operator Yamal Airlines. To the surprise of passengers, the middle thrust reverser can be deployed during the descent to slow down the aircraft.
