The TBF/TBM was an all-metal, mid-wing torpedo and level bomber designed for use from aircraft carriers or shore bases. It was large for a single-engined aircraft of the time but of conventional construction. The fuselage was a semi-monocoque structure built up from formers, longitudinal stringers and stressed aluminium alloy skin.
