Tenth Anniversary Meteor Tribute from 1954

After a decade in service The Aeroplane’s July 9, 1954 issue looks back over the type’s development with a particular focus on 25 Sqn

The Meteor was the UK’s first jet fighter to enter service and joined the fight in World War Two in 1944. Its speed made it ideal to go up against the German’s V1 flying bomb.

All-weather Meteors in Service

NUMBER 25 SQUADRON, as we reported last week; was recently presented with its Standard by the C.-in-C. Fighter Command, and is one of several R.A.F. Squadrons now operating new marks of all-weather Meteor fighters, photographs of which appear on the following pages. This month – July 12 to be exact – is the tenth anniversary of the introduction into service of the Gloster Meteor, and throughout its long and distinguished service career it has shown to a remarkable degree the development potential of a good basic design.
