A federation of seven emirates make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its military air arm, the UAE Air Force and Air Defence (UAEAF&AD), is well funded. The country has long been a supporter of military operations by the US and other coalition nations, dating back to the fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. A decade later, in March 2011, the UAE sent six F-16s and six Mirage 2000- 9s to Italy to assist enforcement of the no-fly zone over Libya. In February 2015, UAEAF&AD F-16s deployed to Al Azraq AB, Jordan, to join the Saudi-led coalition fighting IS. That same year its aircraft joined the Saudi-led coalition conducting air strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
