Ultimate Airports: Rio de Janeiro/Santos Dumont

 

Rio de Janeiro is a city that needs little introduction. The beaches, the Carnival parades, the statue of Christ the Redeemer and the Sugarloaf Mountain cable car are all iconic landmarks. The metropolitan area is now home to more than ten million residents, with locals having had to move upwards and beyond the mountains as the city expanded. As a result, limited flat spaces remained to build an waters Bay situated next to Sugarloaf and adjacent to the city centre made it the perfect location for a seaplane base in the 1920s.
