Melbourne Tullamarine is one of the most important gateways in Australia, and is in the midst of a dramatic renaissance. Chris Frame experiences the changes first hand, and finds out how the airport is helping to shape the future of the city of Melbourne and the state of Victoria.

Melbourne Airport (MEL) has held the number two position in Australia’s rankings since it opened in 1970. It has experienced challenges over the years, particularly after Ansett Australia entered administration in 2001, but it is now undergoing a major revitalisation designed to position it as the nation’s airport of choice. Chief of Aviation Simon Gandy told Airports of the World that the city is growing rapidly, and its population is likely to exceed Sydney’s by around 2029. He expects more businesses will focus on the area as the shift continues, and believes MEL needs to be ready.
