A video circulating on social media reportedly confirms that the world’s only Antonov An-225 was in fact destroyed during fighting at Gostomel Airport near Kyiv in Ukraine.
The unverified footage, which was reportedly filmed on either February 25 or 26, depicts the distinctive hangar building with the associated damage seen in aerial satellite imagery.
Underneath, the yellow and blue striped nose of the six-engine giant can be made out amongst the smoke billowing from the building.
Manufacturer, Antonov responded to the video on Twitter saying, “NO NO NO NO” and called on people to “wait for official announcements about the condition of the aircraft”.
It's not clear how much damage has been caused, but Ukrainian state defence company Ukroboronprom said in a statement: "Mriya will definitely be reborn."
The firm estimates the restoration of the aircraft will cost more than $3bn and take over five years.
"Our task is to ensure that these costs are covered by the Russian Federation, which has caused intentional damage to Ukraine’s aviation and the air cargo sector," the statement added.
