The Belgian Air Component completed the latest Baltic Air Policing detachment in April, the latter portion of which was conducted under new regulations bought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

The three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania declared and gained independence from the USSR in the early 1990s, with a new strategic goal of integrating militarily and economically with the western world and joining NATO. With very limited air assets, the North Atlantic Council approved an interim solution for safeguarding the integrity, security and safety of the Baltic airspace by other member states.
