When a navy operated Tornados

Doug Gordon details the varied roles undertaken by Tornados of the German Navy.

As a partner in the Panavia Tornado’s development and production, Germany wanted the aircraft for both its Luftwaffe (air force) and Bundesmarine (navy).  An order was placed for 112 of the Interdictor/Strike (IDS) variant for the navy and these were allocated to two wings: Marinefliegergeschwader 1 (MFG1 - Naval Air Wing 1) at Jagel Air Base and Marinefliegergeschwader 2 (MFG2) at Eggebek, both on the Jutland Peninsula.
