Why did the Mitsubishi SpaceJet fail?

With prototypes flying and firm orders in place, why did Mitsubishi axe its regional jet programme? Mark Broadbent details the turbulent times which led to the cancellation of the SpaceJet project.

In what was not so much a case of rising sun as setting sun, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation’s parent company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), formally announced the cancellation of the SpaceJet programme as part of its financial results released in February. The Japanese manufacturer said it had “failed to confirm sufficient business viability for resuming development” of the type.
