Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome in Essex, Europe’s largest surviving First World War aerodrome, is hosting a Wings and Wheels show, featuring modern and classic aircraft and vehicles, on May 28
“Last year was a record breaker and in 2023 we hope to welcome even more people to this unique site,” said Ian Flint, Chief Executive Officer of the charitable trust which runs the heritage site.
“A great mix of new and returning aircraft will, weather permitting, take to the skies above us to thrill and enthral. There will be opportunities for visitors to get much closer to these incredible machines than during our regular opening times,” he continued.
For those who prefer their transport grounded, the ‘Wheels’ part of the event hosts numerous examples of classics from the 20th century. Already revving up for the day are vehicles from the Aston Martin, Morgan, Corvette, Morris Minor and Norton Owners Clubs – among many others.

Proceeds from Wings and Wheels supports the work to preserve and protect Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. Situated between Chelmsford and Maldon, it features the largest collection of Royal Flying Corps buildings in the world. It was the base for B flight of 37 Squadron (Home Defence), Royal Flying Corps which was tasked to protect London from raids by German Zeppelin airships and Gotha heavy bombers.

“We are ever mindful of our mission to ensure that the spirit, bravery and sacrifice of early aviation during the Great War is not forgotten. That is fundamental to everything offered here,” Ian Flint added.
Tickets for Wings and Wheels can be purchased in advanced through the website www.stowmaries.org.uk. They will NOT be sold on the day.
