Wizz Air Abu Dhabi begins operations

The airline has recently revealed routes to Athens and Thessaloniki with more to follow in the coming months

Wizz Air’s United Arab Emirates (UAE) subsidiary has commenced operations with flights beginning last week between Abu Dhabi and Athens.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has now revealed a new connection from the UAE capital to Tel Aviv, Israel, which is expected to commence on February 12.

It is hoped that the addition of the new destination will create new opportunities for travellers whilst further diversifying the UAE’s tourism industry.

“The launch of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi recognises [the city] as a bold new frontier for ultra-low fare travel in the region,” said József Váradi, chairman of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi. “We most welcome the opportunity to contribute to Abu Dhabi’s efforts to provide a new segment of travel in the UAE in line with its socio-economic vision. We are looking forward to working in strategic partnership with our stakeholders in Abu Dhabi for the benefits of the country by opening up new travel options for residents and tourists.”

Flights to Athens from the UAE capital commenced on January 15, with flights to Thessaloniki set to follow from early February.

Developmental holding company ADQ and Wizz Air Holdings created Wizz Air Abu Dhabi as a joint venture. It was initially announced that Athens, Thessaloniki, Alexandra Kutaisi, Larnaca, Odesa and Yerevan were to be added to the route network. The company plans to announce more destinations over the next few months.

According to the airline, its fleet – which is made up of four brand-new Airbus A321neo aircraft – will have the lowest environmental footprint compared with its competitors in the region.
