When a doomed B-17 ran into four Luftwaffe Bf 109s, one bombardier saved his wounded friend by giving up his parachute… and his life

The war effort from 1939 to 1945 revealed many heroes across many continents, determined to fight for their country. Even now, some 80 years on, little-known stories of almost incomprehensible bravery are being discovered. One such tale is that of the crew of a B-17 called ‘Opissonya’. More specifically, the story of Lieutenant David Kingsley, who selflessly gave his life in order to spare that of his crew mate.
